AltWrightr helps you find and fix missing alt text across your Webflow site - Assets, CMS image fields, and Rich Text images. This guide walks you through installation, daily use, and best practices.

Running into an error? See the Support page for troubleshooting and contact options.

1. Install AltWrightr

  1. Open your Webflow workspace and go to Apps & Integrations.
  2. Find AltWrightr in the Webflow Marketplace and install it.
  3. Authorize the app when prompted. AltWrightr needs permission to verify your Webflow user and to read and update assets and CMS content on sites you select.
  4. Open a site in the Webflow Designer and press E to open the Apps panel.
  5. Launch AltWrightr on the site you want to scan.

2. Connect your Webflow account

The first time you use AltWrightr on a site, you may be asked to connect your Webflow account via OAuth. This lets AltWrightr access your authorized sites through the official Webflow Data API while the Designer Extension provides the in-Designer UI.

  • Click Connect and approve the request in the popup window.
  • In OAuth, select the site you currently have open in the Designer.
  • Keep the authorization window open until you see a success message.
  • If the popup closes early, click Connect again - expired links cannot be reused.

After a successful connect, AltWrightr remembers the site authorization. You usually do not need to reconnect every time you reopen the app. You can revoke access anytime by disconnecting AltWrightr from your Webflow workspace under Apps & Integrations.

3. Where AltWrightr finds images

AltWrightr is a hybrid Webflow app: a Designer Extension for the in-Designer UI, plus a Data API backend for scanning and applying alt text updates. It covers these image sources:

Content type What AltWrightr does
Asset library images Scan for missing alt text and apply approved updates to assets
CMS image fields Scan collection items and update alt text on image fields
Rich Text images Find images embedded in Rich Text and update their alt attributes

You can also use the browser dashboard at altwrightr.appsrow.com to connect via OAuth and run scans outside the Designer.

4. Scan and fix workflow

  1. Open AltWrightr in the Designer (or browser dashboard) on an authorized site.
  2. Run a scan to find images with missing or inadequate alt text.
  3. Review the list of issues. Filter by status if needed.
  4. Open an issue and click Suggest to draft alt text from the asset name, filename, or CMS context - or write your own.
  5. Edit the suggestion if needed, then Apply the update back to Webflow.
  6. Repeat for remaining issues, or use bulk suggest/apply flows when available.

5. How suggestions work

AltWrightr creates suggestion drafts from metadata already in your project:

  • Asset name - preferred when a meaningful display name exists
  • Filename - cleaned and title-cased from the image URL (hash-like CDN names are skipped)
  • CMS context - item/field names when scanning CMS or Rich Text images
  • Field name - last fallback before a generic "Image" label

Suggestions are a starting point, not a guarantee of WCAG compliance. Always review alt text before applying it.

6. Unpublished CMS sites

When you apply a CMS or Rich Text alt text update, AltWrightr saves the change to the CMS draft first. If the site is not published yet, you can still review the draft in Webflow and publish when ready.

7. Tips for better alt text

  • Describe the image's purpose in context, not just the file name.
  • Keep alt text concise - usually a short phrase or sentence.
  • Skip decorative images when empty alt is intentional; focus on informative images.
  • Rename assets meaningfully in Webflow so suggestions start from better labels.
  • For large cleanups, work in batches and spot-check applied updates.

8. Permissions AltWrightr uses

By default, AltWrightr requests Webflow OAuth scopes needed to:

  • Verify the authorized Webflow user (Hybrid authentication)
  • List and identify your sites
  • Read and update Assets (including alt text)
  • Read and update CMS items and Rich Text content

Review the scopes carefully during install. You can revoke access at any time from Webflow Apps & Integrations.
